Welcome to the ‘Mounjaro Makeover’ FAQs. Take a look below at the frequently asked questions about our new procedure for excess skin surgery.
Suitability and Candidacy
Who is a good candidate for a ‘Mounjaro Makeover’?
You’re likely a good candidate if you’ve reached a stable weight and are in good general health.
The best results come once your weight has settled, as further weight changes can affect your final shape.
You should also be a non-smoker or willing to stop for several weeks before and after surgery, and free from conditions that affect healing.
A consultation is the surest way to confirm whether loose skin removal surgery is right for you.
Can anyone have excess skin removal surgery after weight loss?
Not everyone is suitable straight away. If you have a BMI over 30, take blood-thinning medication, are diabetic, or use medicines that affect healing, such as steroids, surgery may not be advisable at this stage. We’ll carefully and honestly assess your suitability during your consultation.
Is loose skin after weight loss ever a health concern rather than a cosmetic one?
Yes, in some cases. Persistent folds of loose weight-loss skin can trap moisture and cause skin irritation, chafing, or recurring rashes, particularly around the tummy and thighs.
Beyond the physical discomfort, many people find that loose skin affects their confidence and how they feel in clothing. Loose skin removal addresses both the practical and emotional sides of this.
Timing and the Weight Loss Journey
How soon after weight loss can I have surgery?
We recommend waiting until your weight has stabilised, typically for several months, before considering post-weight-loss surgery.
Operating too soon, while you’re still losing weight, can compromise your results, as the skin may continue to change afterwards. This waiting period also gives your body time to recover from the demands of significant weight loss.
Your surgeon will advise on the ideal timing for you.

Why does loose skin after Mounjaro happen in the first place?
Loose skin after Mounjaro develops because rapid or significant weight loss doesn’t always allow the skin to shrink back.
When skin has been stretched over time, it can lose its natural elasticity, especially as we get older. The faster and greater the weight loss, the more noticeable the excess skin tends to be. This is entirely normal and affects many people who use GLP-1 medications.
What happens if I leave loose skin untreated?
Untreated skin won’t tighten on its own, and in most cases, it stays the same or becomes slightly more lax with age.
While it isn’t always harmful, it can lead to skin irritation, hygiene difficulties and ongoing frustration with your appearance.
There’s no risk in leaving it, but many people find that loose skin surgery is the only reliable way to achieve the smoother shape they want. The choice is always yours, and we ’re happy to talk it through.
Areas and What to Expect
Which areas are most affected by weight loss and loose skin?
The tummy, arms, thighs and breasts are the most commonly affected areas. The abdomen tends to show the greatest change, as it stretches significantly during weight gain.
Many people also notice sagging on the upper arms and inner thighs, along with a loss of breast volume. Excess skin removal surgery can target one area or several, depending on your goals.
How is loose skin removal actually carried out?
Loose skin removal surgery removes excess skin and tightens the underlying tissue to create a firmer, smoother contour. The specific technique depends on the area being treated and the amount of skin to be addressed.
Incisions are placed thoughtfully to keep any resulting scars as discreet as possible. Your surgeon will explain exactly what your chosen procedure involves before you decide.
Risks and Safety
What are the risks of excess skin removal surgery?
As with any surgery, there are risks to be aware of, including bleeding, infection, delayed healing and scarring. Because this is major surgery, there’s also a risk of blood clots, which is why staying mobile after your operation is so important.
Smoking, certain medications and underlying health conditions can increase these risks. We take your safety seriously and will discuss every risk openly so you can make a fully informed decision.
How can I reduce my risks before loose skin surgery?
You can lower your risks by stopping smoking and nicotine use for at least three weeks before and six weeks after surgery.
Maintaining a stable weight, staying in good general health and following all pre-operative advice also help.
Being honest about your medical history and medications allows us to plan your care safely. Small steps beforehand can make a real difference to your recovery.
