Pregnancy and childbirth are remarkable journeys that bring profound changes to a woman’s life and body.
While many of these changes are cherished, some women find that their bodies do not return to their pre-pregnancy shape, despite a dedicated diet and exercise.
A mummy makeover is a set of procedures designed to address these specific changes, helping women restore their figures and regain confidence.
At Reflect Clinic, we understand this is a deeply personal decision. This comprehensive guide provides clear, professional advice on every aspect of the mummy makeover journey, from the initial consultation to the final, rejuvenated result.

What is a Mummy Makeover?
A mummy makeover is not a single surgery, but a bespoke combination of procedures performed together to address the effects of pregnancy and breastfeeding on the body. It is tailored to each individual’s unique needs and goals.
The aim is to rejuvenate the breasts and abdomen, which are the areas most commonly affected by childbearing.
Typically, a mummy makeover includes procedures for the breasts and the tummy. For the breasts, this might be a breast uplift (mastopexy) to correct sagging, a breast reduction, or a breast enlargement to restore lost volume.
Implants may be used in conjunction with an uplift to achieve the desired fullness and shape.
For the abdomen, the most common procedure is a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty). This surgery removes excess skin and fat and, crucially, repairs the abdominal muscles (recti) that may have separated during pregnancy. This separation is something that no amount of exercise can fix, and repairing it is key to achieving a flatter, firmer stomach.
Liposuction is also frequently performed at the same time to contour adjacent areas, such as the flanks or thighs, further enhancing the overall shape.
This combination of surgeries is designed for women who have completed their family and are in good health, seeking to restore their pre-baby body.
The Procedure
Undergoing a mummy makeover is a significant surgical event that requires meticulous planning and expert execution.
The surgery is performed under general anaesthetic, meaning you will be asleep for the entire duration. At Reflect Clinic, patient safety and comfort are paramount.
The length of the procedure depends on the specific combination of surgeries being performed, but generally takes several hours.

Mr Gerard Lambe will begin by performing the agreed-upon procedures, whether they are a breast uplift, a tummy tuck, or liposuction. Each element is executed with precision to ensure natural-looking, harmonious results.
For instance, during a full tummy tuck, an incision is made low on the abdomen, similar to a caesarean section scar, allowing the removal of excess skin and tightening of the underlying muscles. All incisions are placed discreetly to minimise visible scarring.
Given the comprehensive nature of the surgery, a hospital stay of two nights is usually recommended. This allows our team to monitor your initial recovery closely and ensure you are comfortable and mobile before returning home.
Recovery and Aftercare for Mummy Makeover’s
A successful recovery is essential for achieving the best possible outcome. Following your surgeon’s aftercare instructions is a critical part of the process.
You will need to arrange for help at home, particularly with childcare and household chores, for at least the first week. It is important to avoid lifting anything heavy while your body heals.
You can expect to feel tired, and there will be swelling and bruising, both of which are entirely normal. We encourage gentle mobilisation, such as walking for 15 minutes every couple of hours while awake, starting from day one. This helps to reduce the risk of blood clots.
For a desk-based job, you should plan for approximately three weeks off work, though you may be able to manage reduced hours after two weeks.
Driving can typically resume after three weeks, once you are free of discomfort and no longer taking strong pain medication. More strenuous activities and exercise should be avoided for at least eight weeks.
You will be required to wear supportive garments, such as a surgical bra and an abdominal binder, for several weeks post-surgery.
These help to minimise swelling and support the healing tissues. Your first follow-up appointment with Mr Lambe will be around 10-14 days after surgery to check your wounds and change your dressings.
Mummy Makeover Risks and Considerations
As a mummy makeover involves multiple procedures under a general anaesthetic, you must be in good health.
All surgery carries inherent risks, including those related to anaesthesia, infection, bleeding, and blood clots. The risk of blood clots is slightly higher with longer, combined procedures, which is why early mobilisation is so important.
This surgery is not suitable for everyone. Individuals with a BMI over 32, smokers (or vape users), or those with underlying health conditions like diabetes may not be suitable candidates.
Smoking significantly impairs the body’s ability to heal and must be stopped for at least three weeks before and six weeks after surgery. It is also important to note that breastfeeding is highly unlikely to be possible after breast surgery as part of a mummy makeover.
Mr Lambe will conduct a thorough assessment and discuss all risks and your suitability during your consultation.
